Wedding Guest in Texas shoots groom in the chest; bride refuses to talk to the police- In Harris County on Thursday August 22, a Texas couple’s wedding day was abruptly brought to an end when an attendee shot the groom in the chest. A helicopter arrived on scene to transport the critically injured groom, while the police interviewed wedding guests, including the bride, who proved to be uncooperative with investigators. But through further investigations it was discovered that an unknown altercation had apparently previously occurred between the shooter and the groom. (Fox News)
Lori Laughlin sentenced to 2 months in prison in college admissions scam. Her husband Mossimo Giannulli, got 5 months- For her role in the college admissions scandal, actress Lori Laughlin faces two months in prison along with two years of monitored release and she must complete 100 hours of community service along with payment of a large fine.This punishment is a result of the $500,000 bribe to get their daughters accepted into the University of Southern California. Major wildfires rage on in parts of Northern California- The wildfires in Northern California have covered over 350,000 acres, forcing thousands of families to evacuate from their homes. These fires (originating in a heat wave) have caused at least five deaths and about 30 injuries, adding more panic to this season of COVID-19. (Twitter)
‘Golden State Killer’ gets life without parole- Joseph James DeAngelo, more commonly known as the Golden State Killer, has been sentenced to multiple life sentences in prison without parole for his infamous debut as one of the nation’s most horrific serial killers. During the two-hour hearing, victims recounted their horrific experiences of attacks which left each person scarred and emotionally plagued by the loss of loved ones. But the final decision of the hearing allowed the overwhelming amount of victims to find a sense of relief and justice as they watched their abuser be put away for good. (The Washington Post)
Mauritians Launch Rescue to Save Wildlife from Oil Spill- When the Japanese ship, MV Wakashio, wrecked along the coast of Mauritius, more than 600 yards of coral reefs were destroyed by intoxicating oil that spilled from the ship. The native Mauritians did not stand by to watch their beautiful reefs be damaged; more than 5,000 volunteers and conservationists began the clean up to save their nation’s exceptional and natural aquatic lagoons. Former Saladoan turns 100!- Mrs. Fern Norwood Raley was born in Salado, Texas on July 29, 1920. Before the modernization of the small town, an old red schoolhouse stood as the main location for schooling where Mrs. Raley attended as a young girl. Mrs. Raley graduated from Salado High School where she met her husband, Dr. Coleman Raley, before leaving for business school in San Antonio. In celebration of her life, the Salado Village Voice honored her and her husband by extending birthday wishes and connecting Salado residents to her through Zoom, to wish her a happy birthday and learn more about her long and interesting life. Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy and more; This isn’t the best time for some of the PGA Tour’s biggest names- During the first week of the FedEx Cup playoffs, some of the most famous names in golf proved that you can’t always win. Tigers Woods and Rory McIlroy were paired for the early morning tee times, displaying that neither golfer was at the top of their game. Tiger has played three tournaments since the return of golf from the pandemic, and he has been fighting for a spot in the Tour Championship at the end of the season. More than anything, golf is a mental game and each pro has their mind set on finishing the season at the Tour Championship. (ESPN)
The Walt Disney Company 3rd Quarter Earnings Report Shows Revenue Down 42%, Parks Income Down $3.5 Billion- When the Walt Disney Company released their earnings for the 3rd quarter of the year, the data showed the dramatic decrease of revenue since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, a result of the forced closings of Disney parks and slowed releases of the box office. In a written statement, the Chief Executive Officer, Bob Chapek, reviewed the challenging times in the world but remained optimistic by the Walt Disney Company’s progressive movement for the future. Funeral home finds Michigan woman still breathing after being declared dead by paramedics-A 20 year old woman, who had been declared dead by paramedics hours earlier, was found still breathing in a Detroit funeral home. This miracle and mystery has left medical officials and family members stunned as to how this oversight or resurrection happened. (NBC)
Runaway Emu Goes On the Lam in New Jersey- An emu with unknown origins was caught running through a neighborhood in New Jersey, before animal control caught him to transport to a shelter. Animal care officials are uncertain if the bird had emerged from the wild or had escaped a farm nearby. The animal control officer confirmed that the emu is in good health but jokingly commented that ‘it needs a bath’. (The Huff Post)
- On Kobe Bryant Day, Lakers Honor The Black Mamba With A 135-115 Win Over Portland In Game 4- On August 24th, recently established as ‘Kobe Bryant Day’, the Los Angeles Lakers honored their late teammate with a win against the Portland Trailblazers. LeBron James, along with other teammates, intend to honor Kobe by continuing his legacy in the game of basketball, every time they step on the court. (Sports Illustrated)
- Strengthening Hurricane Laura prompts mandatory evacuations along Gulf Coast- With the progressive and expanding storm headed for Louisiana and Texas, thousands of families were forced to evacuate their homes in precaution to the newly classified hurricane. Meterologists have confirmed that Hurricane Laura will likely result in deadly flooding and fierce winds, along with huge waves that will crash into land and destroy entire towns. (Fox News)
- This 23-year-old Nigerian is creating a digital collection of African stories for children in different languages- After reading his six year-old niece’s books, Dominic Onyekachi realized how little representation their Nigerian culture was displayed in the stories. So, Dominic began to write his own books which greatly demonstrate the culture of Nigeria, and give children a chance to identify with their heritage through a creative outlet. Through his online platform, Akiddie, children can easily access books about their Nigerian history and learn in a unique way about their own culture. (CNN)
- The Batman' debuts its first trailer with Robert Pattinson as a gritty Dark Knight- The new Batman movie has released its first trailer, sparking excitement for superhero fans all across the world. While ‘The Caped Crusader’ has been adapted many times to accomodate to the DC Comics franchise, Robert Pattinson’s portrayal as Batman seems to reflect on a darker and personal aspect to the character. This new adaptation to the character has not seen much resistance however, within the first 24 hours of its release, the trailer received more than 7 million views. The highly anticipated movie is set to release in theaters on October 1, 2021. (CNN)
