SAU’s International Program welcomes students from all around the globe- Southern Arkansas University has 174 students from 31 different countries all over the world, currently enrolled. These numbers usually reach over 200 international students, but COVID-19 restrictions have reduced this number for the current semester. International students are drawn to Southern Arkansas Univeristy for numerous reasons, including the university’s countless programs and affordable accommodations. International students are a large part of SAU’s school culture and are strongly encouraged to attend. (Magnolia Banner News- Local News).
Election Day has arrived -- Arkansas polls will be open until 7:30 p.m.- On November 3rd,2020 (Election Day), Columbia County will be offering local voting centers for citizens who have not already voted for the 2020 election. The importance of exercising the right to vote has been demonstrated all over America, and Magnolia, Arkansas is no different. Until 7:30 p.m. on November 3rd, polling places will be open to allow citizens to cast their essential vote. (Magnolia Reporter- Local News)
North Little Rock gunfire hits teen in vehicle- On Sunday night, a 14-year old passenger was critically injured by gunfire from another vehicle on an access ramp to Interstate 30 in North Little Rock. There is an active investigation to discover the shooter, the information released revealed the gunman was driving a yellow Dodge Challenger. Meanwhile, updates on the teen have not been released from the Arkansas Children’s Hospital. (Arkansas Democrat-Gazette- State News)
Missouri sheriff: Man wanted in connection to homicide could be in Hot Springs area- According to the Vernon County Sheriff’s office (in Missouri) a potential suspect in regards to a homicide is possibly in the Hot Springs area. Authorities say that Aaron Goodwin is being investigated for the abandonment of a body that is in connection to a homicide that occurred on October 28 in Vernon County, Missouri. (KARK- State News)
A woman died while scuba diving in a lake at Montana's Glacier National Park- A park ranger discovered an unresponsive 18-year old woman after receiving a report about a scuba diving accident. The woman was declared dead after first responders were unable to resuscitate her. The cause of death has not been determined yet but it is believed that she may have suffered from extreme decompression sickness, which is a risk of scuba diving. (CNN News-National News)
Vandals spray paint "MAGA" and "TRUMP" on Jewish headstones- At a Jewish cemetery in Grand Rapids, Michigan six headstones were spray painted to read ‘MAGA’ and ‘TRUMP’ . According to authorities, an investigation to discover the vandals is underway, but other than the red spray paint, there was no other evidence found. Despite the small amount of information offered about the vandals, the police are determined to find them and come to justice from their cowardly act. (CBS News- National News)
Hurricane Eta inches closer to Nicaragua as Category 4 storm- Hurricane Eta grew closer to Nicaragua’s coast with devastating winds and heavy rain, pushing the storm to a Category 4 hurricane. Heavy rainfall caused rivers to overflow across Central America, and has sustained winds of over 130 mph, allowing it to maintain strength until it reached landfall. According to Guillermo González, director of the country’s emergency management agency, Eta caused roofs to blow off houses, and trees, poles, and powerlines to be ripped out of the ground, thankfully no injuries or deaths have been reported. Police in Pakistan recovered the teen girl after alleged forced conversion and marriage- On October 13, a 13-year old girl was reported abducted from her home and was found two days later married to a 44 year old man who had forged a marriage certificate stating she was 18 years old. The teen is a Christian living in Pakistan and was forced to convert and marry a Muslim man. After nearly a month of her abduction, and lost court cases against the abductor, the girl was finally rescued and reunited with her parents. (BBC News- International News)
Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes a driving force behind getting people to vote: 'Trying to do whatever I can'- Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been advocating and using his platform to encourage voting this Tuesday, November 3. Patrick Mahomes knows his impact and his power of his voice and wants to use it to encourage an American right, which remains important. (Fox News- Sports News)
Tennessee Titans acquire CB Desmond King in trade with Los Angeles Chargers- Desmond King joined the Tennessee Titans from the Los Angeles Chargers as a sixth round pick for 2021. The addition of King provides the Titans with a much needed help on offense. (ESPN News- Sports News)
'We're No. 1': Pepperdine men, Ole Miss women make statements at East Lake- The men’s golf team from Pepperdine University and the women’s golf team from Ole Miss University dominated the Colonial course. The Pepperdine men’s team was ranked number one in the country before COVID-19 hit and the team confirmed their title at the East Lake Cup. The Ole Miss women’s golf team's strong team dominated the women’s tournament and are set to win the national championship in the spring. (Golf Channel- Sports News)
'The Mandalorian' powers up with a polished second-season launch- On October 30, Disney+ released the second season of the highly anticipated Star Wars series, “The Mandalorian”. Fans of the Star Wars universe have been impatiently awaiting the release of the second season and, according to reviews, were not disappointed in the slightest. The Mandalorian is set to release a new episode each week until the season finale which airs on December 18. (CNN News- Entertainment News)
Johnny Depp loses UK libel case over 'wife-beater' claims- On Monday, Johnny Depp lost his high stakes case against the Sun tabloid for calling him a ‘wife-beater’ because a British judge believed Depp abused his ex-wife, Amber Heard. According to Depp’s ex-wife, his abuse occurred as a result of his heavy drug addiction, causing her to constantly fear for her life. (ABC News- Entertainment News)
Two escaped wolf hybrids captured in California, one still loose- According to officials in a California county, two out of three wolves were recovered after they escaped from their owner on November 3rd. According to the Monterey County Health Department, the three hybrids (domestic dogs/wolves) escaped their home in the San Benancio area. (UPI News- Weird News)
